Rum-based Cocktail
Inspired by the classic Cuban Daiquiri, adapted with strawberries
A Brief History of the Strawberry Daiquiri
The original Daiquiri is a Cuban classic, traditionally made with just rum, lime, and sugar. The strawberry twist came later, quickly becoming a favourite around the world for its fresh, fruity twist. While frozen versions are popular in bars and beach resorts, the shaken style brings out a fresher, more natural flavour that’s easier to make at home with the right tools.
Ingredients
- 50ml white rum
- 25ml freshly squeezed lime juice
- 15ml sugar syrup
- 4–5 fresh strawberries (hulled)
- Ice cubes
Optional:
- Dash of strawberry liqueur for extra sweetness
- Strawberry slice or lime wheel for garnish
Equipment You’ll Need
- Boston Shaker
Jigger (25ml/50ml)
Hawthorne Strainer
Fine Mesh Strainer (optional for a smoother finish)
Bar Spoon or Muddler
Rocks glass or coupe glass
Method
Step 1 - Prep the Strawberries
Place the hulled strawberries into the larger tin of your Boston shaker. Use a muddler or bar spoon to gently mash them until juicy and broken down.
Step 2 - Measure Your Ingredients
Use your jigger to pour in 50ml white rum, 25ml fresh lime juice, and 15ml sugar syrup. Add a dash of strawberry liqueur if you’d like to boost the sweetness.
Step 3 - Add Ice & Shake
Fill the shaker with ice, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for around 12–15 seconds. You’re aiming to chill the mixture and break down the fruit further for maximum flavour.
Step 4 - Strain into Your Glass
Use a Hawthorne strainer, and optionally a fine mesh strainer, to pour the drink into a chilled glass. This removes any pulp and seeds for a smooth texture.
Step 5 - Garnish & Serve
Garnish with a fresh strawberry or a lime wheel on the rim. Serve immediately and enjoy the vibrant colour and sweet-tart balance of this classic drink.
