Product Care & Use
These BarBits Product Care Instructions & Material Guide are designed to help you get the best performance and longest life from your BarBits products. They are general recommendations and may not cover every situation. Always follow any instructions or symbols shown on the product or packaging. BarBits cannot accept responsibility for damage or faults caused by misuse, incorrect washing, extreme temperatures or failure to follow these care instructions.
Ceramics
Dishwashing
To avoid unnecessary damage and preserve the appearance of your ceramic items, we recommend the following:
Wash before first use and wash items promptly after each service.
Follow your dishwasher manufacturer’s guidelines for wash temperature, rinse cycle and detergent dosage. Assess water hardness and use water softeners if required.
Use plastic or rubber scrapers to remove excess food residue before washing. Metal utensils or abrasives may damage the glazed surface.
Never wash cutlery or other metal items mixed in with ceramics. These should be washed separately in suitable cutlery baskets.
Storage
Wherever possible, use appropriate racks for storage.
Ensure handles and spouts do not knock together, as this can cause chipping and glaze damage.
Keep contact with metal surfaces to a minimum to reduce metal marking and abrasion, especially on metal counters. Using plastic or rubber mats to line metal surfaces will help protect the glaze.
Guidance
BarBits ceramics are oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe within a temperature range of approximately -40°C to 250°C, unless otherwise stated. Selected ranges may carry an edge chip warranty.
To reduce the risk of thermal shock, do not subject products to sudden extreme changes in temperature (for example, from a freezer straight into a hot oven or under a grill).
Matt glaze and coloured items may show wear and tear more visibly than standard white glazed products. Like all matt glazes, cutlery can mark the surface if not handled carefully.
Maintaining adequate stock levels, rotating items correctly and handling them with care in service will help extend the life of your ceramics and offer better value over time.
If you are unsure which ceramic products will give you maximum performance, please check the product information or speak to BarBits or your local BarBits distributor.
Glassware
Dishwashing
Our glassware is designed for commercial glasswashers, except for double-walled glassware, which should be hand washed only.
Wash all new glasses before first use.
Avoid washing glassware above 60°C, as excessive heat can bake debris onto the surface.
Dispose of any cracked or chipped glasses rather than placing them in the glasswasher.
Use non-caustic detergents. Caustic detergents can dull or damage the glass surface.
Storage
Store glassware in correctly sized compartment glass racks wherever possible.
Do not stack glassware unless clearly marked as stackable.
Do not place or store cutlery in glasses, as this may scratch and mark the glass surface.
Melamine
Melamine is a robust plastic that is highly scratch, chip and break resistant and can offer excellent value if cared for correctly.
Use plastic or rubber scrapers to remove food residue before washing. Metal utensils or abrasives may damage or scratch the surface.
Do not use abrasive detergents or bleach, as they may stain or damage the surface.
Melamine products are dishwasher safe but not suitable for boiling water, ovens or microwaves. They are designed for temperatures between approximately -20°C and +70°C.
Melamine is suitable for use in chafing dishes and bain-maries within the temperature guidelines above.
Acacia Wood
Acacia is a durable hardwood with a rich, warm colour and natural grain variation. Correct care greatly extends its life.
Acacia wood is not dishwasher safe. Wash only by hand in warm soapy water.
Do not soak in water. Rinse and dry immediately after washing.
Do not leave in direct sunlight. Store in a cool, dry place.
Acacia can dry out over time. Occasionally apply vegetable oil or food-safe wood oil to help maintain the natural appearance and prolong product life.
As a natural material, colour and grain will vary from piece to piece. Over time, you should expect a normal level of wear and tear on the surface.
Olive Wood
Olive wood is known for its strength and striking grain. Each piece is typically carved from a single block of wood.
Olive wood is not dishwasher safe and should only be hand washed in warm soapy water.
Do not soak in water. Dry immediately after washing.
Avoid direct sunlight and store in a cool, dry place.
Olive wood can dry out with use. Frequently apply olive oil (ideally after each wash) to nourish the wood, highlight the grain and extend its life.
As a natural product, size, shape and finish will vary, which is part of its character. Over time, a degree of surface wear is normal.
Slate
Slate is not dishwasher safe. Wash only in warm soapy water.
Do not soak in water and dry immediately after washing.
Cutting directly on slate with sharp or serrated knives will mark the surface.
The maximum recommended temperature for hot items placed on slate is approximately 70°C.
Enamelware
Enamelware is steel coated with a porcelain enamel layer. With use, the outer enamel may chip, exposing the steel below, which naturally oxidises. The product remains safe to use.
To prolong life:
Wash before first use.
Before using for cooking or baking, a light coating of cooking oil can help prevent staining and make cleaning easier.
After use, soak in warm or hot water and gently wash with liquid detergent.
Do not use abrasive cleaning pads or gritty powders, as they can cause chipping.
Do not place empty enamelware or allow it to boil dry on a hotplate or gas hob.
Copper Plating
Product care
Hand wash in warm water only after each use.
Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
When tarnish appears, polish gently with a suitable metal polish and a soft cloth.
Do not
Allow copper-plated surfaces to come into direct contact with acidic foods (e.g. vinegar, citrus).
Use over direct heat or open flame.
Scrub with abrasive sponges.
Use industrial detergents on copper surfaces.
Leave the product wet; standing water may cause permanent marks.
Copper-plated items are not dishwasher safe.
Please note: copper will naturally oxidise and patina over time.
Gun Metal Black
Hand wash in warm water after each use.
Dry completely with a soft cloth.
If tarnish appears, use a suitable metal polish and soft cloth.
Do not use over direct heat or flame.
Do not scrub with abrasive sponges.
Do not use industrial detergents.
Do not leave the product wet; water marks may stain the surface.
Gun Metal Black items are not dishwasher safe.
Galvanised Steel
Galvanised steel offers a rustic alternative to stainless steel but is more prone to corrosion.
Avoid direct contact with food. Always use greaseproof paper or liners, especially for hot or oily foods.
Hand wash only in warm soapy water – galvanised steel is not dishwasher safe, as caustic detergents will accelerate corrosion.
Prompt washing and careful drying will reduce staining and extend product life.
Vintage Steel
Before first use, wash thoroughly in warm soapy water with a soft sponge.
After use, wash as soon as possible to remove salts, acids and fats that can cause corrosion.
Dry immediately or remove from the dishwasher as soon as the cycle finishes to avoid prolonged contact with moisture.
Coated Stainless Steel – Iron/Rust Effect
The Iron/Rust effect coating is decorative and delicate. Each item is individually hand finished, so every piece is unique.
Care
Hand wash only in warm soapy water.
Dry completely with a soft cloth after washing.
Do not
Use over direct heat or flame.
Scrub with abrasive sponges.
Use industrial detergents.
Use in a microwave or dishwasher.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is highly durable and, if cared for correctly, can provide many years of service and excellent value.
All stainless steel products in the BarBits range are produced to a high standard and are free from impurities that could impair performance.
Most of our stainless steel items are dishwasher safe, unless otherwise stated, and should not be left to soak before washing.
Stainless steel is rust-resistant, not rust-proof. Incorrect care, harsh chemicals, prolonged moisture and contact with salts or acids can still cause staining or corrosion.
A suitable metal polish can be used periodically to maintain appearance.
Some specific stainless steel ranges, such as cutlery and cookware, have additional guidance (see below).
Stainless Steel Cutlery
Cutlery is polished to a high standard to help maintain a quality finish.
Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for wash temperature, rinse cycle and detergent dosage. Assess water hardness and use softeners as needed.
Wash before first use and promptly after each use to remove salts, acids and fats.
Cutlery is dishwasher safe but should not be left to soak before washing.
Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as they may scratch or stain the surface.
Wash cutlery in appropriate cutlery baskets that are not overfilled, so water can circulate.
Dry immediately or remove from the dishwasher as soon as the cycle ends to reduce the risk of corrosion and rust marks.
Stainless Steel Cookware
Stainless cookware is durable, hygienic and generally dishwasher safe.
Suitable for use on most heat sources, including induction (unless otherwise stated).
After use, remove any burnt-on food and wash promptly to reduce the risk of corrosion.
Keep flames and heat sources to the base of the pan. Do not allow flame to rise up the sides, as this can cause discolouration.
Metal utensils may scratch or mark the surface.
Ensure items are dry before storing.
Vacuum Beverage Servers
Stainless steel vacuum beverage servers keep drinks at temperature for extended periods when cared for correctly.
These products are not dishwasher safe. Dishwashing can damage the vacuum seal.
Hand wash in warm soapy water with mild detergents.
Spare lids may be available for selected models to help extend product life.
Aluminium
Aluminium is a softer metal than stainless steel and needs more careful handling.
Aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat and is widely used in cookware ranges.
Aluminium products in the BarBits range are not dishwasher safe. Caustic detergents will discolour and damage the surface.
Wash by hand and avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners.
Aluminium Cookware & Bakeware
Aluminium cookware offers excellent heat distribution.
Suitable for use on most heat sources excluding induction.
Remove burnt-on food and wash promptly to reduce corrosion risk.
Avoid sudden temperature changes (e.g. plunging a hot pan into cold water), as this may cause distortion.
Metal utensils may scratch or damage the surface.
Ensure items are fully dry before storing.
Non-Stick Aluminium Cookware
Care for non-stick aluminium as above, with extra precautions:
Do not use metal utensils or abrasive cleaning items on the non-stick surface.
Use heat-resistant plastic or silicone utensils.
Oven safe up to approximately 230°C. Overheating can damage the non-stick coating.
Cast Iron
Care & Use
Wash thoroughly before first use.
After each use, hand wash in hot soapy water using a brush.
Do not use harsh detergents, scouring pads or abrasive cleaners.
Do not soak or submerge for long periods, as this can damage seasoning.
Cast iron will rust if not dried immediately. After drying, lightly coat the inside surface with cooking oil and heat gently for a short time to restore seasoning.
Do not put an empty pan on a hot hob or allow it to boil dry.
Do not shock the pan with cold water when hot; this can warp or crack the iron.
Always use oven gloves when handling.
Not suitable for microwave or dishwasher use.
Re-seasoning
If seasoning is lost or the pan has been heavily cleaned:
Grease the inside with vegetable oil.
Place in an oven at 175–200°C for 15–30 minutes or until the oil has dried.
Allow to cool and wipe away any excess oil.
If rust appears, remove with wire wool or a wire brush, rinse, dry thoroughly and re-season as above.
If food becomes burnt, fill the pan with water, bring to the boil, discard the water and dry thoroughly, then re-season.
When cooking, keep heat sources to the base of the pan and avoid flames rising up the sides. Cooking oil is recommended to prevent sticking. Acidic foods can mark the surface if left in the pan.
Black Iron Cookware
Black iron cookware is suitable for all heat sources.
Products are supplied with a protective lacquer that must be removed by washing in hot soapy water before first use.
Season before use by gently heating approximately 1 cm of oil in the base, allowing it to cool and then wiping away.
A natural non-stick “patina” will form with regular use.
After cooking, carefully wipe out with kitchen paper rather than soaking.
Always store in a dry place. If light rust spots appear, remove gently with a scourer and re-season.
Black iron products are not dishwasher safe.
Professional Non-Stick Bakeware
Care for professional non-stick bakeware as you would aluminium cookware, plus:
Avoid metal utensils or abrasive cleaning items to protect the coating.
Use heat-resistant plastic or silicone utensils.
Oven safe up to approximately 240°C / 475°F / Gas Mark 9.
Fridge, freezer and dishwasher safe.
Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene is a flexible plastic that offers great value and is often translucent.
It may be combined with other materials (e.g. rubber) for non-slip trays.
Check product symbols for dishwasher safety and temperature range.
Many polypropylene gastronorm pans are dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe.
Polyethylene (PE) – Low & High Density
Polyethylene is used for our chopping boards.
High-density PE is tougher and more resistant to cutting than low density.
PE is not dishwasher safe, as heat may cause warping.
Typical safe temperature range is approximately -40°C to +95°C.
SAN Plastic

Acrylic Plastic
Acrylic is used primarily where a clear, glass-like appearance is required (for example, some mills and display items).
Acrylic is not dishwasher safe and should not be exposed to temperatures above 50°C.
Laminated Wood Trays
Laminated wood trays are robust and lightweight.
They are not dishwasher safe.
Clean by wiping down with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
Fibreglass Trays
Fibreglass trays are dishwasher safe.
After dishwashing, stack trays flat to help maintain their shape.
Typical safe temperature range is approximately -50°C to +140°C.
Product Fixings
Most BarBits products that require fixings are supplied with standard fixings suitable for typical installations. However, some items may require different fixings depending on the surface (for example brick, metal or timber). These specialist fixings are not included as standard and may not always be shown in the product listing.
We strongly recommend using suitable fixings for your wall or surface type and, where necessary, consulting a qualified tradesperson. BarBits cannot accept responsibility for damage, poor performance or injury caused by incorrect installation, the use of unsuitable fixings or failure to follow installation guidance.
