Vodka-based Cocktail
USA, 1980s
The Cosmopolitan we know today rose to fame in the 1980s and ’90s thanks to the modern mix of vodka, triple sec, lime, and cranberry. Though earlier versions existed, it became a cultural icon when adopted by bartenders in New York and Miami - and of course, made its mark in television pop culture. Its crisp pink hue and citrus-forward profile make it a timeless favourite.
Unlike many modern shortcuts that use bottled mixers, this version goes back to basics — using real pineapple juice, coconut cream, and fresh ice for an authentic taste.
50ml white rum
25ml coconut cream
50ml fresh pineapple juice
10ml sugar syrup (optional, to taste)
Crushed ice or small ice cubes
Pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry (for garnish)
Boston Shaker
Jigger (25ml/50ml)
Hawthorne Strainer
Fine Mesh Strainer (optional for extra clarity)
Martini or Coupe Glass
Use your jigger to measure 50ml white rum, 25ml coconut cream, 50ml pineapple juice, and 10ml sugar syrup if desired. Pour all ingredients into the shaker tin.
Place your martini or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare your cocktail.
Fill the shaker with ice, seal it, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds to fully chill and blend the ingredients.
Empty your chilled glass. Using a Hawthorne strainer (plus a fine mesh strainer if preferred), pour the cocktail in cleanly.
Express an orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then garnish on the rim or inside the glass. Serve immediately.
