Tequila Based Cocktail
Mexico, 1930s–40s
The Margarita Cocktail is believed to have originated in Mexico between the 1930s and 1940s. While its true creator is debated, the drink gained massive popularity for its balanced combination of sharp lime, sweet orange liqueur, and smooth tequila.
By the mid-20th century, it had become a favourite across North America and remains a staple on cocktail menus worldwide.
50ml tequila (blanco recommended)
25ml freshly squeezed lime juice
20ml triple sec (e.g. Cointreau)
Lime wedge and salt (for rim)
Ice cubes
Jigger (25ml/50ml)
Citrus Press or Juicer
Boston Shaker
Hawthorne Strainer
Fine Mesh Strainer (optional)
Coupe or Margarita Glass
Plate or Rimmer for salting the rim
Ice Scoop
Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip the rim into coarse salt using a rimmer or small plate. Set aside to chill.
Use a jigger to pour 50ml tequila, 25ml lime juice, and 20ml triple sec into your shaker.
Fill the shaker with ice. Shake firmly for about 12–15 seconds to properly chill and combine.
Use a Hawthorne strainer (and a fine strainer for extra smoothness) to pour the cocktail into your prepared glass.
Add a lime wheel or wedge on the rim for a fresh citrus look. Serve immediately and enjoy the tangy balance of sweet and sour.
